I recently came across a Simon Sinek quote that stopped me in my tracks:
"Hire people inspired to achieve something big over people who demand something big before they feel inspired."
As I work with our largest enterprise clients on their AI transformation journeys with Salesforce AgentForce, I'm watching this principle play out in real-time. And let me tell you—the organizations getting it right are creating something remarkable.
The AI Talent Paradox
Here's what I'm seeing across boardrooms: companies racing to hire "AI experts" with impressive credentials, competing on compensation packages, and wondering why their transformation initiatives still feel sluggish. Meanwhile, a smaller group of organizations is taking a different approach—and they're miles ahead.
The difference? They're not just hiring for skills. They're building teams of people genuinely excited about what AI can do for customers, employees, and their business.
What AgentForce Taught Me About Talent
Working on AgentForce implementations has been illuminating. The technology is powerful—autonomous agents that can reason, orchestrate, and take action across your entire business ecosystem. But here's the thing: the technical capability isn't the bottleneck.
The bottleneck is having people who wake up thinking, "How can we use this to solve our most pressing customer challenges?" versus those thinking, "What's my equity package look like?"
I've watched teams transform when they're led by someone who's genuinely inspired by the mission. A product manager who sees AgentForce as the key to finally delivering 24/7 personalized service. A business analyst who's excited to free customer service teams from repetitive tasks so they can focus on complex, meaningful interactions. A data architect inspired by building trust layers that put customers in control of their AI experiences.
These people don't need to be convinced. They convince others.
The Right Questions for AI Team Building
As you evaluate talent for your AI strategy and execution teams, I'd encourage you to shift the interview lens:
Instead of: "What's your experience with large language models?" Ask: "What problem keeps you up at night that you think AI could help solve?"
Instead of: "What's your expected compensation?" Ask: "What would make you most proud about this work in five years?"
Instead of: "Walk me through your technical certifications." Ask: "Tell me about a time you championed something that wasn't initially popular because you believed in it."
The first question in each pair will help you hire qualified people. The second will help you hire people who move mountains.
Building vs. Buying Inspiration
Here's the good news: inspiration isn't just something people either have or don't have. It can be cultivated. Some of my most effective client teams started with skeptics who became believers once they understood the "why" behind the transformation.
This means:
Start with purpose, not features. Before diving into what AgentForce can do, align on why it matters. What customer pain are you solving? What business outcome are you enabling? What does success look like for the people who will use these systems?
Create space for vision. Give your team time to imagine the possible, not just execute the plan. The best AI strategies I've seen came from empowered teams given permission to think big.
Celebrate the inspired actions, not just the completed tasks. When someone goes above and beyond because they're excited about the mission, recognize it. You'll get more of what you reward.
The Transformation Within the Transformation
AI transformation isn't just about implementing new technology. It's about cultivating a new kind of workforce—one that's energized by possibility rather than entitlement, driven by impact rather than just incentives.
As you build your AI teams, remember: two types of people will apply. Some will ask what you can do for them. Others will ask what they can do with this incredible technology.
The latter group will transform your business. The former will just transform your org chart.
Choose wisely.
