What Leaders Must Do Right Now: The High-Leverage Actions for the Window We're In

There's a window open right now that won't stay open.

The organizations that move with intention in 2026 will establish advantages that compound for years. The ones that wait for clarity — for the technology to stabilize, for a consensus playbook to emerge, for a competitor to go first — will find themselves in a very different position by 2027.

I've spent the last several posts laying out the landscape. Today I want to get specific. These are the highest-leverage moves available to leaders right now.

Stop waiting for an enterprise-wide strategy before taking enterprise-level action.

This is the most common delay pattern I see. Leaders recognize the urgency but wait for a comprehensive, fully-governed, board-approved strategy before doing anything meaningful. By the time that strategy exists, the window has narrowed.

You don't need a perfect strategy to start. You need a directional commitment and a bias for learning.

Pick two or three high-friction workflows. Deploy agents into them. Measure what changes for the people doing that work. Learn fast. Adjust. Then expand.

The strategy doesn't precede the action. In this environment, the action informs the strategy.

Invest in your AI literacy layer — at every level of the organization.

Not a one-time training event. A sustained, embedded, role-specific literacy program that helps people understand what AI can do, what it can't, how to work with it effectively, and how to recognize when it's wrong.

This is the highest-return investment most organizations aren't making. Because adoption without literacy produces risk. And literacy without adoption produces nothing.

The sweet spot is building both simultaneously — practical tools in people's hands, combined with the judgment to use them well.

Make your data foundation a strategic priority, not an IT initiative.

Conversational AI, agentic platforms, and robotics systems are only as good as the data they operate on. Poor data quality doesn't just produce bad outputs — it destroys trust, slows adoption, and creates liability in customer-facing environments.

This is not a technology problem to be solved by a data team. It's a strategic imperative that requires executive sponsorship, cross-functional ownership, and a commitment to ongoing hygiene that doesn't end at go-live.

If your data isn't ready for AI, your AI isn't ready for your customers.

Develop your first generation of human-AI team leaders.

The managers who will define organizational culture in the agentic era aren't the ones who know the most about technology. They're the ones who can hold the human side of the equation with skill — who can build trust across a team that includes both people and AI, who can coach humans to work effectively alongside agents, and who can make judgment calls about when to trust the system and when to override it.

Find these people. Develop them intentionally. Give them the early assignments that will build their fluency. They will become the most valuable leaders in your organization.

Start the robotics conversation before it's an urgent one.

You don't have to be deploying humanoid robots in 2026 to need to be thinking about them in 2026. The cultural, operational, and workforce design questions that physical AI raises are long-cycle problems. They require trust-building, stakeholder engagement, policy development, and organizational learning that takes time.

The leaders who wait until a robot is being installed on the floor to have the workforce conversation will be too late. The ones who start the dialogue now — honestly, openly, with their people — will have built the foundation that makes the deployment successful.

The mindset that holds all of this together.

In every transformation I've been part of — across 20+ years of enterprise consulting — the differentiator has never been the technology. It's been the posture of the leadership.

Organizations that lead through this era will be the ones who approach it as a continuous journey rather than a discrete destination. Who invest in people as fiercely as they invest in platforms. Who stay curious instead of certain. Who build organizational muscle for adaptation rather than plans for arrival.

The window is open. The question is what you do with it.
